Role Summary - This is a 12- 18 Month Term Contract Role

Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Content and Communications, the Specialist, Communications and Channels plays a key role in supporting the objectives of the Strategy, Research and Communications (SRC) team, as outlined in the annual operations plan. This role supports the execution of the content and channel management plans to share critical resources, insights and information with key corporate stakeholders, including the tourism industry, Alberta residents, and internal team members.

Working collaboratively across the organization, the role helps elevate Travel Alberta’s profile as a leading destination management organization by contributing to high quality communications products that are delivered on time through clearly defined processes and channels. Whether through a briefing note or news release, a web page or video, they understand how to craft a compelling narrative that will resonate with their target audience and can do so effectively. 

A skilled writer with a keen attention to detail, the Specialist creates precise, effective content including articles, social media posts, news releases, briefing materials, thought leadership content, and key messages. Supported by the Manager, Corporate Content and Communications, the Specialist assist in translating organizational priorities into compelling communications products and supports the maintenance of a shared editorial calendar, coordinating inputs, deadlines, approvals, and distribution across teams.

The role functions as both a communicator and an internal resource, staying on top of processes, workflows, and interdependencies across the SEC team and the broader organization while also remaining flexible and adaptable in response to shifting priorities. This includes supporting internal communications channels, breaking down silos through information-sharing practices, and helping teams navigate systems, tools, and timelines. The Specialist is knowledge-oriented and service-minded, acting as a trusted resource who understands organizational priorities, research outputs, and corporate processes, and who helps others access and use information effectively. A strong working knowledge of excel is essential.

Working closely with the Corporate Graphics Specialist, the Specialist helps transform research, insights, and testimonials into compelling visual assets. The role also supports video and web projects by working from established briefs, timelines, and feedback.

Key Responsibilities

Channel management and content development:
  • Identifies ideas and creates compelling and effective content in alignment with Travel Alberta’s corporate communications calendar, in a variety of formats for a range of audiences and channels, such as, but not limited to:
    • Industry Hub content, web pages, news and articles.
    • Social media content (Twitter, LinkedIn).
    • “Connections” e-newsletter articles targeting industry stakeholders.
  • Maintains awareness of the public environment, stakeholder and shareholder perspectives to support content development within established priorities and corporate narrative.
  • Distills complex research into strong communications products for internal and external distribution to a wide range of audience.
  • Prepares and publishes content for websites (internal and external), e-newsletter publications and other digital channels as required, in alignment with established plans.
  • Identifies opportunities and provides recommendations to improve communications effectiveness across digital corporate channels including social media, Connections, and the Industry Hub.
  • Collaborates with other Travel Alberta teams and agency stakeholders to implement changes to digital corporate channels and products, in alignment with Travel Alberta’s digital roadmap and corporate communications strategy.
  • Generates story ideas and coordinates content development processes for the SEC team in support of Manager, Corporate Communications.
  • Ensures Travel Alberta’s corporate brand and voice is consistently applied to all content.
  • Compiles and analyzes monthly and quarterly performance reports for owned and earned channels.
  • Coordinates distribution of Connections e-newsletter and other corporate communications products.
  • Acts as a subject-matter-expert for digital corporate channels, including the Industry Hub and Connections newsletters.
2. Social Media: 
  • Develops weekly social media calendar for corporate and SLT channels in accordance with SEC’s corporate content strategy.
  • Creates and schedules social media posts based on the approved weekly plan.
  • Identifies ideas and creates compelling and effective content for social media distribution.
  • Monitors and responds to social media conversations, flags and escalates potential reputational issues to Manager, Corporate Content & Communications, and recommends strategic approach.
3. Communications and research support, project coordination and administration:
  • Supports weekly standups with teams within SRC by tracking project progress and informing project processes, ensuring coordination across the team.
  • Provides overall project coordination support, including workback schedules and documentation.
  • Assist with financial administration processes for Strategy, Research and Communications team.
  • Monitors and supports procurement and contract process and documentation for vendors.
  • Supports development of process documentation to maintain business continuity for SRC.
  • Curates, synthesizes, and translates research, insights, and corporate information into clear, accessible knowledge products for internal and external audiences.
  • Supports knowledge sharing across the organization, ensuring timely distribution of key information, updates, and insights.
  • Supports and maintains processes and channels that enable organizational knowledge flow and ensures that key messages reflect the most recent data.
  • Supports continuous improvement in knowledge-sharing practices, identifying gaps, redundancies, and opportunities to improve usability and access.
  • Coordinates production of monthly online dashboard updates and user materials.
  • Identifies opportunities for alignment between SEC, research, and other teams across the organization.

Required Qualifications

1.Educational Background:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Business, Political Science or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Experience:
  • Minimum of five years in a corporate communications, project management, or strategy role.
  • Experience in writing for a variety of audiences and styles from corporate business reports to website copywriting to industry blog stories.
  • Experience with publishing requirements for web, social media and email publications.
  • Experience with project management, horizontal collaboration and evaluating and measuring the implementation of communications strategy using analytics against KPIs.
  • Experience using research and insights tools, analyzing data, and communicating research results.
  • Experience managing contractors and budgets.
3. Problem-Solving Abilities:
  • Versatile, responsive, and results-oriented, with strong critical thinking skills.
4. Communication Skills:
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and measuring communications plans and tactics.
  • Ability to translate business goals, objectives and results into compelling corporate storytelling.
5. Organizational Skills & Adaptability:
  • Experience with client service-focused delivery, managing deliverables and deadlines for multiple internal and external stakeholders.
